Return to Owner Policy (RTO)

The following are Precious Paws guidelines, requirements, and fees charged upon Return to Owner. These guidelines and policy are set in conjunction with the agencies who brought your pet in:


CATS


When your cat is brought in, we immediately check it for a microchip and post your pet on our Facebook page.


When you make arrangements to retrieve your pet, you need to bring with you:


  • Your driver's license
  • Proof of rabies vaccine*
  • Proof of City Pet tag**
  • Cash or check only if a fee is to be paid ***
  • Pet carrier (We will provide for a fee, if necessary)


DOGS


When your cat is brought in, we immediately check it for a microchip and post your pet on our Facebook page.


When you make arrangements to retrieve your pet, you need to bring with you:


  • Your driver's license
  • Proof of rabies vaccine*
  • Proof of City Pet tag**
  • Cash or check only if a fee is to be paid ***
  • Pet leash (We will provide for a fee, if necessary)

* Pet Owners have 72- hours, unless other arrangements are made, to return the proof of rabies vaccine to Precious Paws if not available at the time of return to owner. If you do not bring proof in within that time-frame, you will be non-complaint and the Police Department will be notified.


** City Tags - Chisholm only: City tags are required for dogs and cats. Precious Paws charges $10 for City tags and will provide the tag number to the City of Chisholm.


*** Boarding Fees/ Miscellaneous: 

  • Boarding fees will start the first full day that the animal is at the shelter through the day they are picked up.
  • Sunday's are exempt, as is any day that we are not open (holidays, etc.).
  • First Time Visitors: Fees are $10 the first full day (first 24-hour period) and $25 per day after that until the animal is picked up owner.
  • Repeat Visitors: Fees are $25 upon entry into the shelter and $25 per day after that until animal is picked up by owner.
  • Minnesota State Law requires animal shelters and stray holding facilities to hold and advertise stray pets for 5 business days only. After 5 days, the pet becomes property of Precious Paws and will be placed for adoption. 
  • Medical fees will be charged if necessary for any medicine we need to give such as flea preventative, de-wormer, etc.
  • If your animal is rushed to the vet for any injuries when they get to our shelter, the owner is to reimburse Precious Paws the amount of the vet visit, medication, and any other charge for the said injury.
