Precious Paws is a nonprofit organization that finds homes for abandoned cats and dogs and provides behavior intervention when needed to improve chances of adoption.

* Please call 254-3300 to schedule an appointment.

4) What is your adoption process?

When you see an animal on our website that you like, you should submit an inquiry to get the process started. You will then be connected with a volunteer who can tell you more about the animal or schedule an appointment to come meet them! In general, you’ll fill out our adoption application after meeting with the animal at our facility. We ask for 2 non-personal references (this cannot be a family member) who can attest to your ability to care for a pet. For renters, we ask for your building information to make sure you are allowed to have dogs/cats in your apartment/house. This information can be in the form of a lease, phone number of a leasing office, landlord, super, or property website. If you currently have or previously had a pet, we ask for your vet’s information. We do not adopt out animals the same day. An application must be processed and approved prior to the animal going home.

If you are looking to adopt a dog, we ask that all members of the household be present to meet the dog (or will be able to come down to meet the dog at some point). This includes other dogs in the household. We want the dogs’ first meeting to be in the safety of the shelter with our staff present.

All of our pets are fully vetted prior to adoption.

5) Are there fees to adopt?

Yes. Adoption Fees are:

  • $120 per cat
  • $135 per kitten
  • $250 per dog
  • $350 per puppy

We do have a discount for multiple animals going to a home.

6) How do I volunteer?

Please visit the volunteer section of our website or call us at 218-254-3300.

7) Do you have a foster program?

We do utilize fosters for some of our animals, including neonatal (bottle-baby) kittens. Our fosters are recruited from within our shelter volunteers. If you’re interested in fostering for Precious Paws, please visit the volunteer section of our website and sign up to become a foster.

8) Do you take donations of pet supplies?

Yes, we can accept certain pet supplies. We’re able to accept wet dog/cat food, wee-wee pads, linens (towels, sheets, blankets are great – please no pillows, dog beds, or comforters), new dog/cat toys, and unopened dog/cat treats. Please see our Wish List on our donation tab.  Another great way to donate much-needed supplies is through our Donate button at the top of the page!

9) Is Precious Paws a “no-kill” shelter?

Precious Paws will never euthanize for space or time. Adoptable animals will stay in our care for as long as it takes to get them adopted or placed in a more suitable rescue or foster situation.

10) My pet is lost. What do I do?

We recommend alerting the community via Facebook or making posters. Social media is also a great tool for spreading the word. You can also call the Police Department to notify them in case they are called when someone finds your pet.  We also recommend calling around to your local shelters and local veterinary clinics to see if your pet has been brought in.

11) I found a dog/cat. How do I find the owner?

Please call your local Police station.

12) Declawing policy.

Precious Paws Humane Society of Chisholm does not adopt to people who intend to declaw their cat, and after having been informed of their position on declawing, you will be required to sign a form promising that you will not declaw your cat. Should you break this promise and Precious Paws finds out that the cat has been declawed, you will be asked to relinquish the cat's ownership back to Precious Paws.
